Semi-Hydroponics 101: Growing Plants in Clay Pebbles
The no-nonsense guide to moving plants from soil to leca — prep, setup, nutrients, and the mistakes that trip everyone up.
What semi-hydro actually is
Semi-hydroponics (or 'semi-hydro') replaces soil with an inert medium — clay pebbles — and a small water reservoir at the bottom of the pot. The pebbles wick water up to the roots, and the roots get constant moisture plus constant air. No soil means no gnats, no compaction, and no guessing whether the pot is dry.
Step 1: Prep the pebbles
Soak the pebbles for 15–30 minutes so they're saturated before planting. With pre-screened pebbles this is about water absorption, not cleaning. Some people boil or soak for 24 hours — it's not necessary if the batch is already clean.
Step 2: Transition a soil plant
Take your plant out of its pot and remove as much soil as you can from the roots. Be gentle but thorough — leftover soil will rot in the reservoir. Place the plant in a net pot, fill around the roots with pebbles, and set the net pot in a cache pot with water in the bottom third.
The catch: plants often drop their soil roots and grow new 'water roots' over the first month. Some yellowing is normal. Go plant by plant rather than moving a whole collection at once — the number one semi-hydro disaster is a hundred plants in transition at the same time.
Step 3: Water and nutrients
Plain water in the reservoir keeps the plant alive; nutrients make it thrive. Use a hydroponic fertilizer at quarter to half strength — clay pebbles hold no nutrients of their own, so everything the plant eats comes from the water.
Flush the pot with fresh water every 2–4 weeks to wash out salt buildup. That one habit prevents 90% of the browning tips and crusty pebbles you see in semi-hydro forums.
Mistakes that trip everyone up
Reservoir too high — water level should sit in the bottom third, never touching the crown. No nutrients at all — pebbles are inert; 'water only' is a slow starvation diet. And skipping the flush — salts build up, pH drifts, and the plant stalls. Get those three right and semi-hydro is about as hands-off as growing gets.
